What is Big Data?

We all use smart phones, right? But have you ever wondered how the data is generated in various forms such as texts (SMS), phone calls, emails, photos, videos, searches, music the list is endless. In South Africa there are about 20 to 22 million people that uses a smart phone and it accounts to one third of the population(1). Now imagine how much data is used in the globe?

As a leading Twitter Influencer that plans, monitors and need to provide feedback to my customers on their Twitter campaigns, such as the Netflix Movie Club, I have increased my retention rate by 80%!

Big Data basically refers to the huge volume of data that cannot be stored and processed using the traditional approach with the given timeframe. Which is characterized by the 5Vs:

Interesting fact,  over 210 million snaps are created every single day (Snapchat, 2020), Google processes over 3.5 billion searches per day (Google 2019), more than 2.2 billion monthly active users on Facebook (Facebook 2020), 5 billion videos are watched on YouTube every single day and there are 306.4 billion emails sent every day. THAT’S A LOT OF DATA, RIGHT? For us to be able to store and process such data, we make use of frameworks like Cassandra, Hadoop and Apache Spark. Only mentioning a few.

Our implementation methodology ensures we tell the story of your data. It is imperative that we plan the story well to ensure the user can seamlessly navigate across the analytics and easily interpret the data.

What is Data Science?

Data Science is a combination of fields like Mathematics, Statistics, Programming, Machine Learning and related concepts in order to understand and analyze business events with respect to data. It also involves solving the problem and having various ways to come up with a solution. It also has ingenious ways of capturing, cleaning, preparing, and analyzing the data.

Data science is not about making complicated models. It not about making awesome visualizations. It is about using data to create as much impact as possible for your company. Impact can be in a form of Insights and Product Recommendations.

That is where our data analytics services come into play. A good visualisation requires a good design, correct utilisation of colour, context, naming conventions, dynamic rendering and so forth so it is essential that all visualisations are well planned within the total application design and user experience.

Brief History of Data Science

Before data science, we popularized the term data mining in an article called (2) From data mining to knowledge discovery in databases in 1996 in it referred to the overall process of discovering useful information from data. (3) According to William S. Cleveland, he wanted to bring data mining to another level. He did that by combining computer science with data mining. We can say he made statistics a lot more technical which he believed would expand the possibilities of data mining and produce a powerful force for innovation. He then called this combo Data Science.

In conclusion, organizations make use of big data to identify trends and detect patterns to predict the future. By doing so organizations know more than their competitors and Big data is the foundation of Artificial Intelligence.

We have vast practical experience in developing Artificial Intelligence solutions for our customers. We have implemented prediction and recommendation models on large scale within our platforms.

Data Science is the study of data, this data can also be in the form of Big Data. Therefore, to sum it up, Big data is the fuel required by Data Science to arrive at meaningful insights.

At Modernising Management we believe, As an expert data engineering and advanced analytics company we are best positioned to unpack a problem, perform due diligence, statistically analyse it to provide insights and recommendations.
